Cuff
Calipers:
The Cuff Caliper is a calibration device
designed to indicate the diameter of a pair of handcuffs or
other restraint devices. Handcuffs or restraint devices
have fixed points. These fixed points are directly
proportional to the diameter of the restraint device. The Cuff
Caliper is designed to indicate at what fixed position the
handcuffs are currently in. In short, the Cuff Caliper
is a device in which the position of the handcuffs or the
diameter of the handcuffs can be easily
identified.

About Us
As a law enforcement officer,
I found that a large percentage of individuals complained
about their handcuffs being too tight. Even though the
handcuffs were applied properly, many times the individual
would continue to complain. In a news article, an individual
claimed he received damage to his wrists because his handcuffs
were too tight. He sued the LAPD-Rampart for millions of
dollars. I then thought there needs to be a way to document
the position of the handcuffs to show that the officer placed
them on the individual correctly. I then invented a scale that
goes onto the side of a pair of handcuffs so the officer can
document the position of the handcuffs in a police report. If
there are complaints or a lawsuit, the officer can recreate
the position of the handcuffs and show they were applied
properly. The Cuff Calipers are currently used in many police
agencies and is a tried and tested solution.
Cuff Calipers is
the higher standard of operation and soon will become the
expected operational standard.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Cuff
Caliper? The Cuff Caliper is a
calibration device designed to indicate the diameter of a pair
of handcuffs or other restraint devices. Handcuffs or
restraint devices have fixed points. These fixed points are
directly proportional to the diameter of the restraint device.
The Cuff Caliper is designed to indicate at what fixed
position the handcuffs are currently in. In short, the Cuff
Caliper is a device in which the position of the handcuffs or
the diameter of the handcuffs can be easily
identified.
Why is this beneficial? One
word---Liability! The Cuff Caliper enables the user to easily
identify the position of the restraint device. The Cuff
Caliper is an easy to read number scale that moves across a
fixed indicator. The number is directly related to a fixed
position that the user can read and document the position of
the restraint.
Anyone who deals with handcuffs,
especially those in law enforcement, has received numerous
complaints about restraints being too tight. In fact, there
have been injuries and lawsuits for this very reason. The Cuff
Caliper enables the user to look at the handcuff and quickly
identify and document its position. Once the position is
identified, it can easily and accurately be recreated. If a
complaint or an injury arises and the position was identified
properly, the user has a valuable ally. Fraudulent claims are
made on a daily basis. The Cuff Caliper provides a defense
against such allegations.
Are Law Suits a Problem? LAPD- Rampart Police were involved in a
lawsuit for millions of dollars. They lost. One of the major
reasons for the lawsuit was that the individual involved
claimed his handcuffs were improperly applied resulting in
injury to his wrists. He claimed the handcuffs were too tight.
If they had been using handcuffs with Cuff Calipers, the
outcome could have been different.
Insurance companies, attorneys, and
police officers like the idea of being able to document and
recreate the position of the handcuffs. It is as easy as
documenting that the handcuffs were double locked. For
example, the officer would document that the handcuffs were
double locked in the number l7 position. Furthermore, this
position can be recreated at any time, such as
court.
Is it cost effective? The
cost of a pair of handcuffs with the Cuff Caliper markings is
nominal and would be very valuable if it prevented just one
lawsuit.
How accurate is it? The
design of the Cuff Caliper is such that it will not affect the
integrity of the handcuff. The Cuff Caliper does not interfere
with the mechanical workings of the handcuff or the restraint
device. As long as the handcuff or restraint device is working
correctly, the Cuff Caliper will remain accurate.
Our Mission
Liability is the amount of
risk that is incurred due to a situation. It is our
responsibility to control liability, manage or diminish its
effect. There will always be liability and risk.
However, by continually developing and improving a higher
standard of operation liability can be controlled. It
takes innovation and direction to be proactive and not
reactive. Once a higher standard of operation is created
or endorsed, it soon becomes the normal standard of operation
and the statuesque. It becomes the expected operational
standard.
Cuff Calipers is the higher standard of
operation and soon will become the expected operational
standard.

Your personalization can be laser marked
onto the arm of any model of ASP handcuff. The Peerless,
Hiatt, and S&W models will have the personalized lasering
done on the base of the handcuff.
